Adon Newman is a developing artist living and working in Columbus, Ohio. He creates interactive sculptures, immersive environments, and engaging video that entice the viewer to examine their connection to the natural forces and elements that surround them and compose their existence. Adon was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1979. His artistic development began in early childhood, attending children’s art classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art and playing cello in his school’s orchestra. In high school Adon became very interested in varied processes of art making. He immersed himself in photography, painting, sculpture, graffiti, and computer art. During this time he also began playing bass in a band that rose to the height of local fame and was even nominated for a Cleveland Free Times music award in 1997.

In 1998, he began studying fine arts at The Columbus College of Art and Design. In 2002, uninspired by his painting and drawing major and wanting to further his music education, he left art school to attend the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio for sound engineering and music production. This proved to be a lucrative decision as he was picked up by a Columbus recording studio and began work immediately after graduation. However, later that year the sparking sheen of his new career had worn dull. In 2003, burnt out and exhausted with endless late night voice over sessions and backstage drudgery, Adon moved back to Cleveland to one again pursue music and re-enter the limelight. To make ends meet between shows, he began working in his family business, a local bead and jewelry store called The Isle of Beads. This too proved to be a lucrative experience. Working there he acquired various crafting skills such as knitting, sewing, wire working, and glass bead making. The days spent restringing pearls and teaching glass bead-making classes rekindled his love for art-making and in 2005 Adon once again relocated to Columbus.

With a renewed purpose, he began attending The Ohio State University’s and was accepted into the Art and Technology program to study under Ken Rinaldo and Amy Youngs. Adon also began to thoroughly study many eastern spiritual philosophies while simultaneously acquiring an intense interest in researching quantum physics. In 2006, interested in deepening his understanding of the function of sound in meditation practices, he began studying meditative instruments including the didgeridoo, Tibetan singing bowls and Japanese shakuhachi flute. These studies evolved into a a line of comparative research that earned him a generous research grant through The Ohio State University in 2007. Adon received his BFA from OSU in 2008 and currently lives and works in Santa Cruz, California.

Adon’s interdisciplinary media background and profound involvement eastern spirituals philosophy and practices are of major importance in the creation of his work. These artworks allow him share his insight and experiences with others and to further his own level of understanding and consciousness.
